Former Zanu PF youth league boss faces arrest

Harare regional magistrate Hosea Mujaya yesterday issued an arrest warrant for former Zanu-PF Youth League leader Kudzanai Chipanga.

This was after Chipanga failed to appear in court to answer to charges of “criminal nuisance” for wearing the ruling party’s regalia in December 2018.

The state outline read in part: “The quartet, well knowing they were expelled Zanu-PF as members, took photos of themselves wearing Zanu-PF party regalia in the form of hats inscribed ED and Kutonga kwaro.

Chipanga’s co-accused are former Zanu-PF officials Munyaradzi Hamandishe, Matthew Mleya and former Finance Minister Ignatius Chombo.

Chipanga’s lawyer, Tungamirai Muganhiri, has explained that Chipanga failed to attend court following a break-in at his house which he had to attend to. However, magistrate Mujaya rejected that explanation.

Chipanga’s troubles started in November 2017 when the military pulled out tanks and placed former President Robert Mugabe under house arrest, leading to his subsequent resignation under pressure of impeachment from MDC and Zanu-PF legislators. Mugabe was also under pressure from protesters to resign, after 37 years in power.
